Sesame Seed is the most sought after vegetable oil in the world as its industrial ingredients can be used for the production of margarine, canned sardine, corned beef, soap making and ink and is well preferred to other vegetable oils because of its lack of odour, chemical composition, colour and taste.
Sesame seeds, also called benniseed, are mainly produced in Benue, Kogi, Nassarawa and Taraba States of Nigeria. Other areas of production include Niger, Jigawa, Kano, Bauch and Kwara States.
The increasing use of Sesame seeds for industrial use, has resulted in its leading the oil and fats market such that Nigeria being the second largest producer of sesame seed in Africa, and ranking seventh in the World, should be deeply involved in exporting the commodity for economic gains. Nigeria earns a over N12. 8 billion annually from exporting to the EU and japan.
Major African Producers of the commodity include Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Niger, Chad as well as Nigeria, who have been charged with working towards the successk establishment of African Sesame Seed Producers Alliance (ASSPA). The Commerce Ministry in discussions with officials of the Sudan Oil Seeds Company had asked that a regional sesame seed organization be established. Other African countries in which it is produced include Egypt, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Tanzania.
EXPORT VOLUME
The product which ranks second to cocoa in terms of export volume in Nigeria, is fast becoming prominent among non-oil exports and is one of the few cash crops that can earn the country foreign exchange as any quantity of the product offered in the market is easily sold. Sesame seeds are produced in Benue, Taraba, Kebbi, Kano, Bauchi, Kogi, Plateau, Adamawa, Kwara, Cross-River, Ebonyi, Niger, Gombe, Katsina, Yobe, Borno and Nassarawa states, with Nassarawa state as the leading producer.
QUALITY & STANDARD
On quality standard, sources disclosed "the Nigerian sesame seed is of exportable quality and is even quoted in the Public Ledger. The federal procedure Inspection Service (FPIS) defines exportable quality of sesame seeds as containing not more than two per cent weight of stones, laterite, extraneous matters and not more than five per cent by weight of seed other than Sesame seed.
PURITY OF SESAME SEED
Purity of 98 per cent and 99. 5 per cent of Nigerian sesame seed are obtainable and traded in the world market especially the UK and Japan. Nigerian natural 98 per cent cleaned is quoted in the Public ledger to be $1,600 per metric tones. "
PACKAGING
On packaging, source said " jute bag is highly recommended for packaging for export. It allows for aeration and at the same time safely holding the seeds, which are very small in size. The weight per bag varies; they are packed in 50kg to 100kg , depending on the market dictate. "
USES
Sesame seed is a source of highly nutritional oil use for cooking. The oil content of the seed ranges from 44 per cent to 54 per cent and the protein content is between 15 to 25 per cent. It is also use to garnish and decorate confectionaries e. g. cake, bread, sweet, burger, hot dogs, etc. It is also used in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, soap and cosmetics, production of animal feeds, etc.
While local planting of the crop starts from April to May and the late planting between August and early September, early crops are harvested between July and August and late crops between November and December.
